The long-debated division between Ethereum Request for Comments (ERC) and Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) within the Ethereum ecosystem has reached its official conclusion. Notably, the ERC has now been solidified as the primary avenue for maintaining standardized and high-quality documentation related to the Ethereum application layer. According to the statement in the ERC readme file, ERC will serve as a fundamental resource for the Ethereum community. It will enable them to track the evolution of application standards, encompassing historical developments and ongoing improvements.

Concurrently, the core EIP, or Ethereum Improvement Proposal, has been delineated as the dedicated framework for enhancing the Ethereum consensus protocol. This distinction sets the stage for more focused and effective governance over the evolution of Ethereum’s underlying consensus mechanisms.

Specifically, the EIP readme file underscored that EIP’s primary objective is to establish and maintain standardized, high-quality documentation for Ethereum itself, as well as the conventions built upon the Ethereum blockchain.

Notably, the EIP authors bear the responsibility of fostering consensus within the community and meticulously documenting any dissenting opinions that may arise during the proposal’s evaluation.

Furthermore, EIPs are intended to be the principal instruments for proposing new features within Ethereum, gathering essential technical insights from the community on pertinent issues, and preserving a transparent record of the design choices shaping Ethereum’s evolution.

Significantly, the ERC and EIP split development marks the culmination of years of discussions and deliberations among the Ethereum developer community.
